For some time, Samsung's catalog was quite confusing. The ranges followed one another and there did not seem to be a logical fit beyond the price, but the Korean manufacturer wanted to put order. The S and Note lines ruled, the A series grouped the rest of the existing models and then the M series arrived (with permission from the new F series). And as a member of this M series we have here the Samsung Galaxy M51.

Apparently less powerful or ambitious models than those of the A series but with a fairly focused feature: autonomy. If the F-series is looking to focus on photography, the M-series is all about sizable batteries. And in this Galaxy M51 we have nothing more and nothing less than 7,000 mAh with fast charging. But the model is more, much more, and we review everything in this analysis to which we have subjected it.

Classic and resistant design

It cannot be said that this Samsung Galaxy M51 is innovative in terms of design, since we are facing a phone that may look like any other except that it has the word "Samsung" printed on the back. The phones have been progressively similar to each other and this is especially noticeable in the cheapest ranges, and exactly the same thing happens in the Galaxy M51. The front is almost entirely for the screen and the back is made of a plastic that is quite resistant to fingerprints.

The design of this Samsung M51 is somewhat generic but it has good finishes and is resistant.

The design is quite classic with the physical keyboard on the left side, although with a fingerprint reader on the power button, which makes the button sink into the frame. In the left frame we have the tray for the microSD and the SIM, the upper part is completely clear and below we have the USB C port, the headphone jack (with FM radio) and the phone's speaker. All quite symmetrical, everything must be said, including a screen that leaves very little chin at the bottom and seems completely centered, even though it really isn't.

At 163 millimeters tall and 213 grams in weight, the Samsung Galaxy M51 is not a compact or lightweight phone, but it is very balanced. The device does not get heavy when you have it in your hand a lot and the coupling of all its parts is very successful. Perhaps the only "flaw" here, so to speak, is that the screen doesn't die invisibly into the phone's frame and we have a slight raised edge. It is not very pronounced but it is noticeable during use, especially if we use the gestures to handle this Android 10. Otherwise, the model feels robust and resistant, and the plastic here has a lot to do with it because it also avoids heat when we press the processor.

It is not a premium range but this screen flies high

As for the screen, we have before us a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus panel, which not only means a large diagonal but also vivid colors (customizable) and deep blacks that provide great contrast. Perhaps we are facing one of the best screens of the latest mid-range to reach the market and that is noticeable in its tactile precision, its own touch, the viewing angles and the maximum brightness, which although it is not significantly high it does allow us to use the phone outdoors without problems.

With a density of almost 400 pixels per inch we will not see pixelated images or jagged edges, and the Gorilla Glass 3 chosen to protect it behaves quite well against fingerprints without being, logically, perfect. We also have (and this is always a plus) the double tap gesture to turn on the panel. By the way, we do not want to stop commenting that we are facing a phone with a perforated panel to house the front camera, and that the perforation is completely centered.

Good sound but oh, the bass'

Finally, and before we jump into the phone's performance, let's talk a bit about sound. As in most phones on the market, the Galaxy M51 has little bass although its volume is quite high. Of course, the distortion does not take long to appear and impoverishes the multimedia section a bit. All that is corrected, however, with a headphone port that extracts quality sound and with a Bluetooth connection that makes everything easier. We also have an equalizer to personalize the experience to a certain extent, and with the headphones connected we can activate the Dolby Atmos sound of the phone.

More power and performance than expected

This Samsung Galaxy M51 does not have the most powerful mid-range processor at the moment, but its performance has been quite satisfactory during our tests. We are talking about a Snapdragon 730G, with the 'gaming' label hanging from its jacket and supported by 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal space. Without a doubt, a success that Samsung has opted for Qualcomm instead of its mid-range Exynos, the phone (and also us) has come out on top.

During the day to day, the use of the Samsung Galaxy M51 is quite fluid. We have not had jams or frame drops while handling the interface, and multitasking behaves quite competently with the classic delays when recovering very heavy apps or games. The most common apps such as messaging, social networks, navigation and others run very smoothly, without giving the feeling that we are dealing with a phone in the middle range, perhaps medium-low, of market performance.

In Xataka Android Six tricks to take advantage of Samsung's Game Launcher

Going to heavier titles is not a problem either, because once we save the somewhat slower loading time, the fluidity is maintained. Probably Game Launcher, Samsung's game-enhancing software, has a lot to do with the latter. In exchange for a little more battery expense, the phone is set to perform like the best and this Galaxy M51 has been able to run, without coughing, really demanding games in FullHD resolution such as Genshin Impact, Asphalt or Clash Royale . But as we will see now, autonomy is not a problem.

We leave you with the performance tests of the Samsung Galaxy M51:

Samsung Galaxy M51 performance tests

As we have said, autonomy is not a problem with a phone that handles an internal 7,000 mAh battery that has offered us, in various tests, screen uses of more than 9 and 10 hours with three days of use. An outstanding autonomy that is also combined with a 25W fast charge that allows you to charge the phone from 0 to 100 in just two hours. To round off the experience, we would have asked for wireless charging, but it is not abundant in these price ranges. A battery, as we say, outstanding.

With each generation, One UI gets lighter and lighter and polishes its imperfections.

Special mention to a proprietary layer, One UI, which is becoming lighter and less expensive for terminals in terms of resources. The Samsung Galaxy M51 runs its version 2.1 on Android 10 and it is quite clean (if you ignore the software package that Microsoft preinstalls yes or yes, naturally). Samsung has been improving its software year after year and this One UI 2.1 is already very far from the Touchwiz that so bad, and deserved, fame had gained over time. In addition, it adds extra features such as a multitude of gestures and settings that improve the phone compared to the stock version of Android.

The battery of the Samsung Galaxy M51 is portentous

We close the performance section talking about the side fingerprint reader of this Samsung Galaxy M51. Located above the phone's power button, the reader hasn't given us a single recognition error even with slightly wet fingers, and unlocking happens quickly. Of course, if you want to improve efficiency, it is convenient to deactivate the accidental button touch protector, since One UI 2.1 sometimes considers that a voluntary unlock may have been the opposite, and forces us to confirm the unlock by touching the screen.

Competent cameras with a macro that is not worth it

We finally landed in the photographic section and this is where we have to look at what equipment the Samsung Galaxy M51 has mounted. For example, on the back we find four sensors. 64 megapixels with f / 1.8 lens for the first, 12 megapixels with f / 2.2 super wide angle lens for the second, 5 megapixels with f / 2.4 lens with macro focus for the third and 5 megapixels with f / 2.4 lens for depth readings . But let's start from the beginning, the app.

The camera application embedded in One UI 2.1 is the usual one that the South Korean brand has accustomed us to. An intuitive, simple app with direct access to the main functions and shooting modes. Initially, we have three: Live Focus (which we all know as Portrait mode or selective blur mode), Photo (automatic) and Video, but in the More tab, in addition to Bixby Vision and AR Emoji, we find more shooting modes than we can add to the bottom carousel, like Macro mode. The switch to the super wide angle lens is permanently floating on screen, so the experience is quite good.

The Galaxy M51 behaves well in light even in somewhat more complicated scenes, with many lights and shadows.

We get to the cameras and it's time to analyze the behavior with light. Good focus and shooting speed, with good treatment of the edges of objects and a somewhat high saturation but without disturbing, very typical of Samsung's general photography. Perhaps we miss a somewhat better handling of the dynamic range for photographs that share lights and shadows, but the truth is that the main camera behaves quite well in light. The AI scene recognition is correct and we get quality photos in almost all situations.

Without light the experience worsens and the noise appears perhaps too soon.

We are in a mid-range phone, so it is not surprising that the photography worsens as the light goes out, and the noise does not take long to manifest itself, perhaps a little sooner than in other phones in its price range. The focus is maintained at a good speed, yes, although the shot slows down and it is easier to capture moving or jerky scenes. The Galaxy M51 behaves well with light sources and we hardly have flares or flashes.

The super wide angle is probably its most fun camera, with good photos in almost all situations and a smooth and very careful effect.

As we said, we have a camera for super wide-angle photography and the result is at the level of what we get with the phone's main camera. Good color, a very soft effect on the edges that lets you know that the camera is different without disturbing you, and here we do find better management of shadow areas. The shot here is still fast and the change, which is done from the app, is quite fast.

Macro photography forces noise to appear too early, and adds to this photography mode being somewhat hidden. Improvable.

The Galaxy M51 has a 5 megapixel camera dedicated exclusively to macro photography and that must be activated expressly. Its result, however, leaves something to be desired. The focus is erratic and it is difficult to know if we are going to get the photograph out of focus or not, in addition to applying processing algorithms that generate a lot of noise. Being such a specific camera, we may not use it as much as the others, but its performance could, and should, have been better.

Few brands handle software blur in these price ranges like Samsung.

Finally, before the selfies, we have the dynamic blur mode, which Samsung calls 'Dynamic Focus' and here the Korean manufacturer brings out all its power. Over time, Samsung has been improving the processing of these photographs and now handles the different planes of a scene like no other, without aberrations in colors or shapes, or artificially out of focus objects when not playing. A great software job at this point, although without light it is more difficult to take advantage of it.

Selfies are almost always good, although without light they become somewhat more complicated. But the blur effect is very good.

And as we said, the selfies. With a completely software dynamic blur mode by having a single camera of, yes, 32 megapixels with an f / 2.2 lens. Here we have good colours, edges and a fast focusing and shooting speed. We have effects to add from the app itself and the camera behaves quite well even when there is not much light, although at this last point it tends to raise the exposure too much, making use of the AI provided by Bixby.

Samsung Galaxy M51, the opinion of Xataka Móvil

It is difficult to find phones in the mid-low price sector that have as many strengths and few weaknesses as this Samsung Galaxy M51. With it we obtain a quality screen without being the best on the market, a performance according to its brain although quite well managed (and supported by an increasingly polished layer) and a camera team that, with its little grays, allows us to enjoy photographing .

The battery is the most striking but it is not, by far, the only good thing that this Samsung Galaxy M51 offers.

There is no doubt, however, that its great attraction lies in an internal battery that is not only huge but also very well treated. Even with this volume of milliamps, it is not easy to obtain the number of hours of use that Samsung starts from its Galaxy M51, and that is loaded with a FullHD + screen that should, in theory, cut hours of phone on.

In general, Samsung is becoming more and more competitive in the lower price ranges of the market and that is always something to be thankful for. Knowing that the brand is highly appreciated and that its marketing force is powerful, this Galaxy M51 can become one of the best-selling models in its manufacturer's catalog as soon as its price enters the market game. And it may not take long to do so.
