The National Council for HIV and AIDS (Conavihsida) reported yesterday that infections of the viral disease in men decreased by six percent. Through a statement, the entity also indicated that from 2010 to 2020 the positive cases of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus in children decreased by 27.6 percent. However, he pointed out that in the same period of time the infection in women increased by two percent.

Through the document, the institution declared that 83 percent of new infections of the pathology in 2020 were detected in key populations, that is, among sex workers, transgender people, and men who have sex with other men .

The agency explained that the aforementioned population group has a high risk of contracting the pathology due to discrimination and social exclusion.

According to official data, in the Dominican Republic there are around 74,995 people living with HIV.
