The foldable phone market is booming. Just weeks after Oppo unveiled its first device of its kind with Find N, we get the first details of the Honor Magic V, the former Huawei's former sub-brand foldable cell phone.

Well, the "details" might be overkill: the company released the teaser trailer you see in the headline image of this article and said we'll know the release date of the mobile phone in the coming days.

However, Honor also confirmed that the phone will only arrive in China for now.

At first glance, the image doesn't say much. It only shows the V-shaped outline of the folded edge of the phone, and when viewed at an angle, you can't even tell if it's a flip-style phone like the Galaxy Z Flip 3. or a book-style phone like the Galaxy Z Fold 3.

However, you've already read the headline for this article, and you're probably wondering why we're so sure it's a larger model like the Samsung Folds. Well that's because we've done a bit of research.

When we saw the image of Honor Magic V, we looked at it for a while before we saw the bright stripes. Ordinary phone users may recognize them as antenna strips, the little plastic strips that metal smartphones have around the edges to ensure that the material of construction does not block the signal to the antennas in the body.

These wristbands are quite small and considering the size of the phone, we imagine they would be bigger if this smartphone were smaller, clamshell. This is not enough to make a decisive verdict, but inspired us to transfer the image to editing software to check can we get more information.

By adjusting the settings, we created the cleanest image with the highest contrast you can see above, and some key details emerged.

First of all, you can see the bulge of the camera: it is located to the right of the antenna band more to the right (these are the ones we have outlined in the picture). Secondly, between the third and fourth band you can distinguish the USB-C port.

So we're pretty sure this image shows a foldable book phone, with the image looking at the partially folded model from below, meaning the bulge of the camera probably protrudes a good distance, and the phone consists of a larger main display in the middle. It sounds obvious but Huawei Mate X does not.

Analysis: There is not enough space for shell cell phones

Thanks to the tests we just showed, it seems very likely that the Honor Magic V is the type of a folding book.

These devices are fashionable among the first foldable manufacturers: the first phones of this type from Samsung and Huawei were just like that, and Xiaomi and Oppo, which only released one foldable one, also took advantage of this form factor.

In fact, Motorola is the only company to debut a shell phone on the Razr, and at the time of this writing, Samsung is the only other company to have a phone like this, although rumors suggest Huawei may have one too soon.

What is it about? Well it's not entirely clear, although it may be for the price. Flip phones cost a lot as they contain a lot of new technology, but flip phones are small and compact so they don't have great value for money. We saw this on the Galaxy Z Flip and Motorola Razr models as the phones were very expensive for relatively small phones.

Telephone companies may be focusing on large, super-efficient foldable phones until it becomes possible to make smaller versions at affordable prices, but we hope to see other types of missiles in the near future.
