Design and screen

The Samsung WW90T684DLE/S3 washing machine has a simple but very elegant design in its different versions. We have tested the white version, which also has details in black -the screen and the drum door- and in silver -the control wheel and the outer part of the door-. These three colors combine very well when it comes to giving rise to a refined design.

Note that, being a modern washing machine, the number of buttons and cycle selector wheels has been reduced to help achieve that sophisticated look. Starting to analyze the design from the front, we find on the left side the detergent and fabric softener dispenser drawer, white in color and with the Samsung logo. To its right is the wheel to manage the use of the washing machine, made of stainless steel, and the tactile buttons to turn on, start and stop the washes, also in silver.

In the upper right part is the screen, black with white letters. It is a panel that can be seen very clearly and that shows you all the necessary information: programs, functions, temperature, spin power and remaining time, among other aspects. In addition, at the bottom it integrates several tactile buttons -they are not visible to the naked eye- that allow you to interact with the washing machine. For example, they allow you to activate the very useful deferred end function that we will talk about in later sections.

Of course, another key design element of a washing machine is the door, which in this model mixes black and silver. It is worth mentioning that it is a door that does not have an opening button, you just have to pull it -carefully, yes- to open it.

Inside this door there is another door, the AddWash, which allows you to enjoy one of the most interesting functions of this washing machine. It is a smaller door that can be opened in the middle of a wash to introduce clothes that you had forgotten at the beginning, without having to empty the water from the drum.

If you are in charge of the washing machine at home, you know that it is very common to remember that you should have put other clothes in just when there is no going back. In those cases, this AddWash door appears as a lifesaver, which only makes you wait 5 seconds to add those forgotten clothes or to add fabric softener during the rinse so that the fragrance is even more noticeable. Of course, this AddWash door cannot be used if the drum temperature is 50ºC or higher or if the child lock is activated.

The last element on the front is the door that gives access to the drain hose of the washing machine, of special importance so that it always works correctly. As the expert in charge of installing the washing machine has explained to us, it is best to clean the filter once a month.

Although the back is not visible, there are some elements that can be useful. We are talking about black hooks that are used to introduce the cables and that they are more organized. In addition, it has some screws to close the holes that you must take care of carefully when you remove them to install the washing machine.

Finally, you must take into account the dimensions of the washing machine, as they are key when it comes to knowing if you can place it in the right place in the house that you have in mind. According to data provided by Samsung, this WW90T684DLE model has net dimensions of 600 x 850 x 550 mm and a net weight of 67 kg. If we talk about the gross dimensions, they are 670 x 890 x 660 millimeters and a gross weight of 69 kg. In addition, it has a total depth of 635 millimeters.

These weeks of contact with the Samsung washing machine have helped us to discover that its performance is exquisite. We are not only referring to how well it washes clothes, but also to the wide number of programs and functions available to make the washing task as easy for the user as possible.

Everything we can do with the washing machine is managed through the control wheel and the touch controls located on the top. When you start using it, after pressing the start button for a few seconds, you have to proceed to a configuration process that only takes a few minutes. It is important that you choose aspects such as the language well, because later it can be difficult to get to the settings menu to solve it.

This configuration includes the calibration process, which takes only a few minutes and allows the washing machine to automatically detect the weight of the clothes and thus control the water level. It is also important so that the washing machine does not vibrate or make too much noise while it is running.

Now yes, after calibration, the washing machine is ready to be used. You just have to turn the wheel to scroll through the programs menu. If you wait a few seconds, the duration of each wash appears below the name. In our experience, the displayed time closely matches the actual time the program takes. The device usually sticks to the time that appears on the screen: if it shows that there are 10 minutes left, you really only have to wait for that.

When the wash is finished, the Samsung washing machine will notify you with a characteristic sound that is quite powerful, so you can hear it from any corner of the house. In addition, the notification tone is also quite long, something that is always positive so that you have time to listen to it and you can go to hang the clothes. If you have the washing machine connected to your mobile, you will receive a notification, although we will talk about that at length in the corresponding section.

In our experience, this Samsung WW90T684DLE/S3 does a great job of doing laundry. It has a capacity of 9 kg, which makes it ideal for washing a large number of clothes at once or large clothes, such as sheets, bedspreads or curtains. We must also talk about the work of EcoBubble technology, which offers better results in cold water. Another feature that shines with its own light in this washing machine is the AddWash door, which we have already discussed in the previous section. Simply, it is a great advantage to be able to add clothes once the wash has already started, because it is common for us to forget something when preparing the clothes.

Focusing on the programs available, this washing machine has a wide variety. This is always positive, as it allows you to choose more precisely depending on the type of clothes you are going to wash. As expected, each program is configured with different temperatures, revolutions and wash cycles. For example, you can choose between a fast mode of 15 minutes -for emergencies-, bedding, cotton, shirts, silent washing, delicates, baby clothes, denim clothes...

There are some shows we need to talk about individually, like Super Speed. It is a quick wash in less than an hour that I have used on numerous occasions during this time, as it allows clothes to be washed quickly, but with guaranteed efficiency. This program speeds up both washing and spinning so that you have your clothes ready in the blink of an eye.

Another program that you should keep in mind is Drum Wash+, a process that you should carry out every 40 washes. For about two hours, the washing machine automatically takes care of cleaning the drum and the seals around the door, eliminating dirt and 99.9% of bacteria. Thus, the bad smell will not be a problem. Do not worry about keeping track of washes, because the washing machine itself will notify you when the time has come to clean the drum.

The deferred end has been tremendously useful for us, especially for energy savings

We cannot finish talking about the functions of the washing machine without mentioning one of the most important, which we have also used on several occasions during these weeks of testing. This is the deferred end, which allows you to program the end of the wash so that it ends just when you want. This function is activated from the settings, the same menu in which you can access tools such as intensive washing or soaking in bubbles that we mentioned earlier. You just have to press for a few seconds on the button of the hand with the +, in the lower right part of the screen.

There's one thing we don't like about deferred end, and that's that you can't choose the exact minute the wash will end. For example, if you set the delayed end at 7:34 p.m., you will only be able to schedule it at 8:34 p.m., 9:34 p.m.... This is a small inconvenience, especially when you want to schedule it at dawn to take advantage of the cheapest hours of electricity. We will delve further into this issue of energy saving in its corresponding section.

Another drawback I could mention is that additional settings can be very hidden from users. To access the main settings, you have to press the hand button that we have mentioned for a few seconds. However, to access the additional settings, you have to press the same button for a few more seconds, so it can be difficult to find that extra menu that has settings as important as language.

In short, this is a washing machine that does a great job when it comes to washing clothes, with a large capacity so that you can wash even the largest clothes you have at home. Features such as EcoBubble technology, the AddWash door, the diversity of programs and the delayed end greatly help to make the experience close to perfection.

Control with your mobile phone and SmartThings

Connecting the washing machine to the SmartThings application is opening a door to a new world of possibilities: you can find out the energy consumption of each wash, send programs to the washing machine, consult how much is left for each wash or receive notifications when the cycle has finished. These are just some of the features available when you connect the washing machine and SmartThings, Samsung's app for controlling smart devices. You can download it on your mobile for free.

After downloading and opening the app on your mobile, you must sign in with your Samsung account. Then, you must make sure that both the washing machine and the smartphone are connected to the same WiFi network. Then, in the SmartThings app you must follow these steps: Add new device > Washing machine and select in which location of the house it is located.

In the washing machine, press for a few seconds the WiFi button, represented by the icon of a phone and located on the right side. Finally, from the mobile you will only have to connect the washing machine to the same WiFi network and that's it, the pairing is complete. Now is the time to discover all the advantages that this relationship can offer us.

First of all, from the mobile you can choose the washing program you want to run, with settings such as the number of rinses or the spin power, and send it directly to the washing machine. Of course, for the program to start you must press the Start button of the washing machine, as the app will indicate. This means that you cannot start a wash directly from the phone without having to contact the washing machine. For example, although you leave the clothes ready and the washing machine closed, you cannot start the program when you are away from home.

While the clothes are being washed, you can see the progress of the process at all times through SmartThings. The app informs you of the washing phase it is in -for example, rinsing-, the remaining time and the end time. Also, when the cycle is complete and it's your turn to hang the clothes, SmartThings will let you know with a notification that has been tremendously useful to us during these weeks.

Sometimes, even when we hear the sound of the washing machine, we forget that we need to hang it up. If you leave the clothes inside for several hours, you know that later it gives rise to bad odors. For this reason, since the mobile is the device that we always have at our side, receiving this notification will make us be alert or remember that we have pending tasks in our washing machine.

In addition, SmartThings also allows you to use the Artificial Intelligence of the washing machine, which learns about your washing habits to make your washing experience even better and recommend those programs that best suit your preferences. Also, if you enter the "Recommendation" option and answer the questions that the app asks you, it will suggest the most suitable program for the clothes you want to wash.

Of course, from the page of the washing machine in SmartThings you can find out all the available programs, as well as the energy consumption that each one of them supposes. Thus, if you want to save energy, this information is very interesting. You can also edit the programs menu to keep only those that you use most frequently.

Another function that adds value to the connection between the Samsung washing machine and SmartThings is self-diagnosis, that is, a tool that informs you of possible technical problems that the device may have. If you enter the "Diagnosis" section, you will find out if the washing machine works correctly or not, a record of the use in the last week (favorite programs and times), access to drum cleaning and an energy control.

If you click on the three dots button in the upper right corner of the app, you will also be able to enter "Settings", which in turn gives access to three very important functions. The first of these is "Automatic dosing" which, as its name suggests, enables the washing machine to automatically take the detergent and fabric softener from the dispenser with each wash.

On the one hand, if you enter "Automatic detergent" you can choose the amount of detergent (less, standard and more) and the hardness of the water (white, medium or hard). On the other hand, if you tap on "Automatic softener" you can choose the amount of softener (less, standard and more) and its concentration level (normal, X2 and X3). As you can see, from your own mobile you can choose such exhaustive settings that were previously unimaginable in a washing machine.

Within "Settings" you can also access "Power control", which we will analyze in more detail in the next section, and in "Drum cleaning history". The latter informs you about the number of washes since the last drum cleaning and also the exact dates and times that you have carried out this process in the past.

In conclusion, SmartThings adds multiple functions to the washing machine from the smartphone: analyze the available programs, learn more about your washing habits, better control energy consumption and see if your washing machine has any technical problems. In addition, we have already seen that you can configure the programs to send them directly to the washing machine and find out in real time how the washing cycle is progressing. Without a doubt, all these functions explain why SmartThings is one of the Samsung applications that you have to install on your mobile even if it is not Samsung.

Energy savings

The Samsung washing machine is also a good choice because of the energy savings it represents compared to older models. These are its characteristics, since it is a class A washing machine in terms of energy efficiency, with a consumption of 49 kWh for every 100 wash cycles. Other data provided by its manufacturer is that the washing machine consumes about 50 liters of water per cycle, has a B spin efficiency, noise emission class A and a sound power of 72 dB during spin.

According to a market study by the Spanish Association of Home Automation and Inmotics (Cedom) published in ABC, having a smart home can mean savings of between 30% and 40% on the electricity bill annually.

We were especially interested in the deferred end, which allows you to postpone the start of the wash so that it ends just when you choose. In our case, we have taken the opportunity to put the washing machine on at dawn, the cheapest period on weekdays according to the Spanish rate.

That way, we scheduled the wash to finish at 8am or a little earlier, just before the most expensive period of light began. In this way, when we got up in the morning, the clothes were already ready to hang out. Another option is to schedule it to end around 01:00. or 02:00 a.m. in the morning, but that means that the wet clothes are in the washing machine for several hours, and can give rise to bad odors due to humidity.

The best smart plugs to gain comfort and save electricity

Another function that can help you save when using the washing machine is "Energy control", available in the SmartThings app. In this section you can see how many kWh you have used with each wash if you consult the daily statistics. If you prefer to check the cost you make with the washing machine in a more general way, you can access weekly and annual data.

At a time when the price of electricity is skyrocketing, this function can be more than interesting to control energy spending. Remember that you can check the price of electricity in real time with your mobile with apps like redOS. Taking into account the price data, you will be able to better choose what time is best for you to put the washing machine on.

If you give priority to savings over an exhaustive wash of clothes, you can use the cycles that consume less. As we have seen in the previous section, in the SmartThings app you can check how much each washing program consumes. For example, cycles like Super Speed ​​or Bedding consume 4 points out of a total of 5 maximum. There are other more efficient ones, such as the cold wash or the 15-minute fast cycle, which only consume 1 point out of 5 maximum.

So far, we've looked at the washer's performance and features extensively. However, there are some more aspects that we can comment on and that you should take into account. One of them comes from the installer of the Samsung washing machine, who has told us that special care must be taken with the wrong introduction of masks and small socks, also known as "pinkies".

According to the expert, it is now common for masks to "sneak" into the pockets of clothes that we put in to wash. During washing, the masks come off and can get into the water inlet and outlet tubes, hindering the correct operation of the washing machine. The same happens with the "pinkies", which due to their small size are also introduced into these tubes. Therefore, it is best to wash them inside a washing net.

In addition to washing the drum every 40 washes, it is also recommended to clean the filter once a month. You can take out the small tube hidden behind the door located in the lower right corner of the washing machine and drop the dirt into a container.

Finally, another aspect that you should take into account is that the price of this Samsung WW90T684DLE/S3 Series 6 washing machine with a 9 kg capacity amounts to 749 euros. It is true that it is possible to find it for less money in stores like Amazon, but for more than 600 euros. So it's still a pretty steep price for a washing machine.

In this way, if you do not need so many technologies in the washing machine and you are not going to take advantage of its most innovative functions, such as mobile control, you can opt for a much cheaper model that will also fulfill the main function: washing the clothes.
