We continue with the best of 2021... according to MC and we do it with a category that seems to have been relegated to ostracism because the news moves in another area. However, what would hardware be without software? It wouldn't be worth anything! In spite of which, it is not as common as before to talk about applications, much less about new applications that are surprising everyone and everyone.

That is why in this special with the best applications of 2021... according to MC, the shape of it changes a bit, not the background: what you can see below includes the applications that we liked the most this year at MC writing team, for whatever reason; And, be careful, because what each one understands by application can vary somewhat.

The best applications of 2021… according to MC

To choose the best applications of 2021 we have only set a limit, caused by the complexity of the matter. Everything else is allowed: platform (PC, smartphones…), model (local application, service…). As we said last year, it is easier to change hardware than software, so we have opted to simply share with you the applications that we have liked the most this year.

Yuka

If you are interested in knowing what you are eating and how healthy and nutritious it really is, this is your application. Yuka is a French project that can really become an addiction at the supermarket or in your pantry.

The way to use it is very simple: you simply scan the barcode of the food in question with the application and it assesses its nutritional quality and explains the reason for that quality. In addition to food, it also includes cosmetics or personal hygiene products with which you can get a surprise.

The app has 1.5 million foods and some 500,000 cosmetic references. But if even so, the scanned product is not on the list, you can add it and the app's nutrition team is in charge of assessing its nutritional index. With this, it is possible to expand the base with some 800 new products daily.

Although it can be used for free from Google Play and the App Store, the app has a paid version in which the search for products is unlocked without barcode scanning, only with a photograph, or the images are personalized. recommendations or alerts. An option that allows you to have almost a nutritionist in your pocket for 15 euros a month.

In short, a perfect app to take care of your diet and therefore, your health that never hurts to have on your mobile.

Panels

of a comfortable reading experience of my comics.

Panels, by Produkt Studio, has everything it is and much more. For starters, it's compatible with the most common comic book formats and with PDF (which I use a lot for scanned old magazines, for example), it has a neat and comfortable interface and synchronization between devices thanks to iCloud.

In addition, unlike other solutions, it is an "open" option to connect to almost any cloud service (Google, Microsoft, Dropbox, ...) or even to external devices such as a flash drive or hard drive. The tedious task of importing comics and checking that everything is where it should be is child's play with Panels.

The app is free, but if you want to make the most of it, it's worth paying the 4.99 euros it costs. In addition, its developers constantly update it, fixing small bugs and adding improvements. You have it in the App Store.

Tails

Updated this month of December, it is a development that is not lacking in my arsenal of software tools and I recommend it whenever I have the opportunity for security and privacy tasks. in a pocket a solution like this free and open source GNU/Linux distribution based on Debian and connecting it to any computer with USB is a guarantee for various tasks.

The best apps of 2021… according to MC

In "Live" format and self-starting, its operation is independent of the operating system of the PC where we connect it, Windows, macOS or Linux, running directly from the external medium without having to install anything on the internal storage unit and with it without affecting the main installed system.

In addition to including a package of basic Linux applications installed as a web browser, email client, office tools or media players/editors, its strong point lies in the online privacy protection it offers. Its default browser is Tor Browser and it uses the Tor network, redirecting communications around a distributed network of relays carried out by volunteers from all over the world.

All Tails applications are configured to connect via Tor while direct (non-anonymous) connections are blocked. In addition, it includes encryption tools to protect files or documents, emails or instant messages.

If you want a secure and private operating system, here is one of the best. And transportable in a pocket anywhere, connectable by USB to millions of computers without having to modify anything in the host system (if you don't want to) and without leaving a trace once you're done.

Clubhouse

Launching a new social network at this point seems a bit far-fetched. And it is that on the one hand we already have an ecosystem overpopulated by them and on the other this type of services is beginning to experience a certain wear and tear, partly due to the controversies that usually surround them, and on the other hand because there are more and more users who become aware of the value of privacy and, in response, avoid exposing themselves to it, as it did in the early years of social networks.

Thus, to create a new service of this type in these times, it is necessary for the proposal to be truly innovative and, of course, for said innovation to be attractive to all its potential users who, in short, are practically anyone with a Internet connection. And that's the hardest part, coming up with an innovative idea that works. And that is what has made Clubhouse shine so much this 2021.

His proposal for voice rooms with one or more speakers and attendees who, as a general rule, can only listen, added to the ephemeral nature of these chats (which can only be heard when they occur, they are not saved for their "consumption" "with hindsight and an invitation-only access policy during its first months, formed the perfect cocktail. Thus, Clubhouse managed, especially during the first months of 2021, to surround itself with an aura of mystery and interest that caused the (rare) invitations to the service will be quoted very upward.

And it's not just that, we've also seen how several services have chosen to reproduce Clubhouse functions, which shows that their proposal was really interesting and innovative. It is true that in recent months it has not given much to talk about, so perhaps next year it will end up being forgotten. But even if this happens, Clubhouse has already identified a new trend and has served as an example for many other social networks.

Atom

It is difficult to choose the best application of the year because of what I mentioned in the introduction: we change more from hardware to software and today a new application appears that surprises every time more difficult, that's why in this article we take the licenses mentioned... and more that I'm going to take, because I'm not only going to talk about an application that I've been using now, but for a long time.

I am referring to Atom, the code editor developed by GitHub with Electron, the framework based on Chromium and Node.js that has revolutionized the development of cross-platform applications for PC in recent years. Thanks to Electron we can enjoy applications like Skype, Microsoft Teams, Simplenote, Evernote, WordPress Desktop, Slack... and although it is true that Electron has its drawbacks, its successes make up for them to a great extent.

But let's talk about Atom... Why do I use an editor if I haven't programmed half a line of code for years? To write, as simple as that. If for whatever reason you write a lot and need to format the text, you have many possibilities at your fingertips, including powerful, but overloaded, uncomfortable and ineffective word processors... Yes, they are the most powerful tool for writing, but they fail in everything else.

So, when you want to take -and save- quick notes, when you want to write long shaped texts without taking up half the screen or losing a large part of the toolbar and the options it contains, when you want to be able to export quickly and without excess from one formatted text to another, but especially when you want the formatting of your text files not to be lost, then you use plain text editors... with Markdown support, if possible.

Once you get into editing with Markdown there's no going back and that's what I did. The only thing that has changed since then is the chosen editor... and there are a thousand. But here's some advice from a veteran in this field: there is no better Markdown editor than a code editor for programmers, and for many reasons, I have not found one to date that I like more than Atom.

Atom is truly a hackable text editor for the 21st Century and this is really cool. If you add to this the support for extensions with which to extend the application's functionalities, it becomes my favorite editor by far. The reason I'm talking about Atom now is because it's in the doldrums in slow agony, all because of another magnificent code editor such as Visual Studio Code, Microsoft's commitment to multiplatform, also created on Electron.

However, and even though VSCode outperforms Atom in several aspects, notably its devilish pace of development, it's not the same. But Microsoft bought GitHub... and that's what it is. My humble tribute to Atom remains here, in the event that 2022 is the year of his final farewell, which would not surprise me (the last update was in July with just a handful of corrections). If you have not come to try it, you have it here.

Flatpak

Flatpak can be defined as a generic framework for deploying applications on GNU/Linux systems, although it is also known as a “universal” package format since it serves the same builds of applications for all distributions (at least on paper).

Officially, Flatpak is a community project, but behind it is the hand of Red Hat, which means that it has many means for its development and improvement. On the other hand, it competes with Canonical's Snap, another "universal" package format with which it has some similarities, but also notable differences, such as the fact that Flatpak is oriented towards graphics applications, while Snap is more general purpose. .

Beyond the debate about whether or not universal package formats are beneficial for GNU/Linux, the great advantage of Flatpak is that it allows you to offer official compilations of applications that on paper should work on any distribution that supports the deployment utility. This makes it possible to break the barriers that “traditional” package formats have presented in Linux, which, in the case of Debian Stable, prevented obtaining the latest version of many applications.

Another notable feature of Flatpak is that it does not interact with the packages in traditional format, or in other words, it works in isolation from the basic components of the system. This approach allows you to get apps without compromising the system, allowing the system to focus on delivering working components. Of course, Flatpak applications do interact with services and functions served by "traditional" packages. For example, the Flatpak version of OBS Studio interacts with PipeWire in Deb format if installed on Debian or Ubuntu.

Not all is great around Flatpak though, as it still suffers from system integration issues and some apps don't work quite right, but the package format is getting better as the months go by and, Seeing the preponderant place that it occupies in Fedora, Silverblue and Kinoite, surely in a few years it will end up establishing itself as a complete replacement for “traditional” packages.

NieR Re[in]carnation

NieR Re[in]carnation has been a pleasant surprise for me. This title surprises, first of all, with its excellent graphic quality. It is clear to me that it is one of the games for smartphones with the best technical invoice that I have had the opportunity to try so far, and the optimization on iOS is simply fantastic. I've played it on an iPhone 8 Plus and it works great.

The fact that it is free is an important incentive, since this means that we can play it without having to spend a penny, and if we like it, we can “reward” the developers with the different micropayments that the title offers.

As I said at the beginning, the technical section is very good, but the great protagonist is the story, and in this sense, it must be recognized that NieR Re[in]carnation is not only very well resolved, but also It offers a very ingenious approach thanks to the change of planes.

The moments of exploration are very enjoyable, and the combat is also a lot of fun. These maintain a classic approach based on turn-based role-playing games, and in them we will also enjoy very good graphic quality. It is not for nothing, and on top of that we have the possibility of activating the automatic mode, and of accelerating the pace of the fighting, if we are short of time.

Without a doubt one of the best games to come to iOS this year, and yes, it can be enjoyed without any problems without having to spend money. It is not a “pay to win”. You have it in the App Store and Google Play.
